Le Creux de l'Enfer, Centre d'art contemporain d'intérêt national and the City of Saint-Étienne share the common ambition to support contemporary creation by promoting the dissemination of visual artists. It is thus formed a partnership around a residence-mission aimed at better deploying the artistic presence in their territory and encouraging the meeting of audiences with the art of our time. The next residency will take place in spring 2024 (March–May), for a summer restitution in Thiers and then in Saint-Étienne in fall 2024.

Objectives of the residence

Residency is defined as an experience of co-creation of one or more works, involving volunteers or specific groups, that the artist chooses to bring together around his project. According to Céline Poulin and Marie Preston, the principle of co-creation is based on the assumption that everyone can bring, in an egalitarian way, a constructive element to creative work, and that the amateurism and professionalism of each is constantly redistributed. These practices are both a field of artistic experimentation and the expression of a policy in their ambition to redistribute the roles assigned by society, to implement the sharing of the sensitive as defined by Jacques Rancière.

The residence-mission must take place on the wide territory of Livradois-Forez and especially on the geographical area between Thiers and Saint-Étienne. It will have to involve audiences and project partners located in this territory. The artist is strongly encouraged to work with local materials and resources.

Temporalities

The artist undertakes to be present on the territory during the entire period of residence, 55 days. In addition, the artist will be able to benefit from personal working time outside the periods during which he is in contact with the public. The residency will take place in spring 2024 (March–May), for a summer restitution to Thiers and then to Saint-Étienne in fall 2024.

Eligibility criteria

The residency is intended for all artists living and working in the territory of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. No age criteria are required, but particular attention will be paid to artistic emergence.

Financial and practical arrangements

The amounts of the residence and artistic distribution allowances are in accordance with the artistic remuneration charter of the Ministry of Culture.

  • Residence allowance (including fees, transport and meals during the residence): 2 400.00€ TTC
  • Production budget dedicated to the residence and its two refunds: €2,000.00 including taxes
  • Broadcast rights for both exhibitions: 600.00€ TTC

The winning artist will benefit from the provision of accommodation in Thiers for the duration of his residency. He will also benefit from housing and a workshop in Saint-Étienne for a period of 1 month to prepare the restitution of his project to the Serre.

Artist Engagement

During the residency, the artist will present his work and conduct meetings with audiences other than those involved in the project. A public meeting and press conference will be held in Thiers to launch the project. A public meeting, in the presence of the public associated with the project, will be organized in Saint-Étienne on the occasion of the exhibition of restitution of the residence at the Serre.

Restitution and mediation

At the end of the residency, the work of the artist will be presented in two stages in the form of a travelling exhibition of about 3 months, in Thiers in the premises of the May Factory and then in Saint-Étienne at the Serre. The exhibition must be designed simultaneously for both spaces and their respective constraints. This exhibition of restitution will have for objective to highlight, a time of encounter, a collaborative work, a problem posed, solved in group and show a work shared and completed in common.
