Appropriating language: national policies and territories
In France, understanding, speaking, reading, writing in French is not always a given. If our constitutional framework under which “the language of the Republic is French” illustrates the key role of our language in the Republican Pact, the challenge is to facilitate access to it for all those in whom the mechanisms of relegation as well asparticipation in social life produce a linguistic handicap. At a time when the new linguistic solidarity between the State and local authorities is a priority for the Ministry of Culture, language pacts make it possible to act on territories in favour of access to French.
