Istres is a city of 40,000 inhabitants in the Bouches-du-Rhône in Provence, equidistant from Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, and Avignon.
The museum's public exhibit consists of archeological objects found at sea, more precisely in the Gulf of Fos, which is about 10 km away.
