In 1989, the Conseil général founded the Arc' Antique studio for conservation and restoration. This is a scientific, technical establishment devoted to the restoration of archeological objects and works of art.

Its philosophy is based on the perenniality of the object under deontological principles of conservation and restoration. Arc' Antique operates under the guardianship of the Ministry of Culture, and aims at the development of three areas:

· Conservation-restoration of ancient metals and ceramics from public or private collections
· A program of research into materials, their technologies and alterations
· Accommodation of temporary staff, and interventions by research and teaching organizations

Because of the geographic location of Nantes, its maritime environment, and the rich history of the French Breton coastline, it is not surprising that the Arc' Antique laboratory specialized in the restoration of objects found at undersea excavation sites.
