From January 2017, 100 young artists will move in residence in 100 schools in France to implement, with a class of students of cycle 3 (Grades 4, 5, 6th) and their teachers, an artistic project.
Supporting young artists, primarily graduates of higher education institutions in the cultural sector and allow children from rural areas but also from priority neighbourhoods, peri-urban areas and overseas a first experience of artistic creationthese are the ambitions of «Creation in progress».
For its all 1era in a new format, this new national system was initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, which is managed by the public cultural cooperation institution «Ateliers Médicis» in Clichy-Montfermeil.
Closed on November 16, the call for applications was open to artists who have graduated for less than five years from all fields of contemporary creation. The concept: propose creative and research projects involving at least 20 days of residence at the heart of schools and schools and as part of a process of co-construction with teaching teams and active participation of students throughout the creation process.
“Creation in progress” is part of the Government’s priority given to youth and particularly in the national policy for arts and cultural education. This public policy is included in the 2017 Finance Bill’s priorities, with a 12% increase in the Ministry of Culture and Communication’s appropriations allocated to it compared to 2016 and a doubling since 2012.
This system is also part of the artistic and cultural education course offered by the national education to all students, which includes meetings with artists and the development of artistic practice among students.
Thanks to this unprecedented effort, half of children and adolescents will have access to arts and cultural education in 2017, compared to 22% in 2011.
For Audrey AZOULAY: We must continue to open the doors of culture. To our children, in our regions, through school. Creation in progress, it is a chance for students to meet creation and dialogue with artists. It is also a highlight of the quality of French artistic formations, the overflowing talent of our young architects, dancers, circassians, authors, visual artists, designers, actors, photographers, etc. and the need for an assertive artistic presence at school ».
For Najat VALLAUD-BELKACEM: Creation in progress is a beautiful device, complementary to the action of teachers and artistic residencies that already existed, and innovative for several reasons: because it targets schools often more distant from an offer of artistic and cultural projects, because it is based on young artists in full professional integration, and because it concerns the whole of metropolitan France and the overseas territories. I am proud that so many schools have volunteered to participate in this project, and I warmly thank the artists who answered the call: they will, I am sure, greatly contribute to the students ».
