Mary has not only looked after Christ's Childhood,
and discreetly observed his public life,
she has also suffered with him the torture of the Passion.
From some scenes of Crucifixion containing several
characters for example, here, the thieves), the three main characters
(crucified Christ, Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist) are often
extracted to make an autonomous image, more interiorized, an invitation to
individual meditation, known as the Calvary.
In another circumstance, Mary is
standing beside her Son.
In the scenes of the Last Judgement,
she is on her knees on the right of Christ judging, imploring his mercy.
If the prayer of the faithful is so often dedicated to the Virgin, that is
because they hope she will be their defender when the judgement day comes.
