- Saint Erige heals the leprous -
- Detail : general inscription of
the panel -
This Latin explanatory legend is situated above the panel,
within the white band that separates it from the upper register.
It reads :
S. ARIGIUS TRES VIROS ELEFANTINOS SANAVIT.
which means " Saint Erige heals the leprous ".
In this
inscription, the word " elefantinos " can be noted. It comes from the
Greek word "elephantiasis ", old name of the leprosy . In the Middle
Ages, this disease was also known as " elephant sickness ", because
the skin lesions evoked the skin of the elephants.
