Ritual baths at Pernes-les-Fontaines,
the piscina

Hebraic rites required women to take
a bath once a month.

At Pernes, as at L’Isle-sur-Sorgues, the presence of an abundant water table not far from the surface allowed for the construction of private baths such as the one shown here. In other ghettos, the Jewish community had enormous collective baths built, such as the ones which survive at Carpentras and Cavaillon.
