Entombment, 1555
In the Fou chapel, beneath the tomb recess which formerly contained the mortal remains of the chapel's founder, Yvon du Fou, seneschal of Poitiers, and of his wife, an entombment has been installed. It is the work of an anonymous artist, created in 1555 according to the date inscribed on the back of one of the figures. The Christ is to be seen, laid in a beautiful sarcophagus by Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus, watched over by the Virgin who is supported by Saint John and two other women saints. This splendid group, which once included two other figures, was originally offered to the abbey of the Trinity (destroyed today) by Renée d'Amboise; her sister was the abbess at the Trinity. |
