The staircase (Ph. Inv. A. Franchella © 1995)

The staircase, lit up by a glass wall, which has unfortunately lost its original indented and marbled window panes, was painted by Eugène-Benoît Baudin with a free-style decor taking up whole height its; the composition makes room for empty surfaces and the hanging flowers do not mix with the row of corn represented at the bottom. The legend has it that farmyard animals caricaturing the family members used to appear next to these vegetable motifs, but, in 1978, the restorer managed to reconstitute a few stencil figures only; on the other hand, he has been able to trace the billiard balls painted on the ceilling, illustrating on of the host's favorite hobbies.
