![]() | The castle and the fragments of the first town wall dominate the site, an escarpment chosen for its defensive advantages. At the summit, the only remains of the castle are some thirteenth to fifteenth-century vestiges, survivors of the demolition in 1620. The wall of the oldest part of the town ringed this castle and defined a zone which was already largely abandoned by the population by the fourteenth century, in favour of the lower town. It was during the fourteenth century that the defensive walls were rebuilt, many elements of these surviving both in the upper town and the lower town. |
