Jean Prodhomme, a technician in the Archaeology Department of the French Ministry of Culture, is a specialist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication. The ultimate aim of an archaeological dig being the publication, particular care must be given to the graphic and photographic documents given to the printer. To help the archaeologist in this task, the author first explains the principles of photoengraving and printing which influence the final result. He then describes in a very practical way the appropriate technics concerning photographs and drawings of the object, its reproduction and some complementary technics (retouching, choice of colours, etc.). An annexe deals with the organization of a graphic arts workshop which is indispensable for most of the technics described.
