The museum, which was opened in 1996, presents the archaeological site of Saint-Romain-en-Gal (a district of Ancient Vienne and a classified site) as well as business and daily life in the city of Vienne during the Gallo-Roman era.
The buildings designed by the architects Ph. Chaix and J.P. Morel are of architectural interest. The glass and metal structure gives the two buildings that project over the site a transparency that fits perfectly into the environment.
The Gallo-Roman mosaics are the most important part of the collection with painted murals and everyday objects forming its basis.
