Water : a history
The aqueducts in the Gère Valley

GENERAL INFORMATION

An aqueduct is a conduit intended to transport water from a collection point outside the city to the latter. The water came either from a stream whose waters collected in a pool to which the aqueduct was connected, or directly from a river using a dam. On arrival at a high point in the city, the water from the aqueduct went into a vast reservoir (water tower) from which several large pipes led. These pipes then branched out to supply the different districts. We know that the public water supply took priority over private use : the public fountains were supplied before private houses.
