Ceramic Culture
|
Geographic
Setting : It has been identified in Romania in the Muntenia plains region
and represents three phases of evolution. Not having been the subject of
wide scale research, this culture is still only partially understood. Habitation : The settlements usually seem to be set on the edge of low plateaus. The rectangular dwellings were at first buried deeply in the ground, then, in more recent phases, built at ground level. Material Means : The ceramic is characterized by a very granular clay and the presence of sand and seed grain. The shapes are varied (pyriforme vases, "salt boxes", etc.) and decorated with incisions, impressions, grooves, and less often, excisions or relief elements. Lithic tools, of Balkan flint, are mostly of the Neolithic style. Tools of bone and horn are rare. Not much is known of their anthropomorphic sculptures, female representations seem predominant. Economics : The economy is based essentially on agriculture (grain) and breeding animals. Hunting and fishing seem to play a lesser role. Funeral Rites : Some tombs and graves have been discovered, located next to the settlement. |
