Title : Skin craft
Shoe and shoemaker's implements

Coming from the breeding of cattle, animal skin was very abundant. Several specific objects, many snippets, pieces of clothes or saddlery, show that this craft was usually practised on the site.

Unique discovery, an entire shoe was found in seventeen fragments and was reconstructed, after being washed, and treated for preservation and restoration.

The preparation consisted in the scraping of fats, with iron tools, the tanning in wooden buckets, totally for the upper part of the shoes, the sheath and the straps, a bit less for soles in order to keep them water-repellent.

Shoes are the best preserved objects. The different parts were sewed together with skin braids or textiles threads, then dried on wooden shoe trees, sometimes decorated, to give them a shape.
