Undeniable resource, wood was a highly mastered material. It was used on the site itself to build houses, but also to make a large number of tools (axes, planes) that would later be used to make ustensils (crockery , combs, saddles...)
The production techniques have been minutely analysed, thanks to shaping traces left on them, and they give information about the elaboration and function of an object.
Among all the available species craftsmen knew perfectly how to choose those which qualities would adapt best to the shaping and future use of the object. Oak was used in architecture, boxwood for spoons and combs, maple for spindles and bowls, ash for archery,etc.
