The United States/European Union deficit in the audiovisual sector in 1998: $6 billion (in 1993: $3.5 billion).

  • Market share in movie theaters of US films in the EU: between 54% and 92% ($2,946 billion compared to $1,054 billion for US films on the European market)
  • Market share in movie theaters of EU films in the US: 3% (Fifth Element + Bean)
  • Share of the major producers in European distribution: 50% (80% in the United Kingdom, 70% in Germany)
  • Share of exportation receipts in the global receipts of the major producers: 43%
  • Budget percentage of a US film devoted to publicity: 50%
  • Average budget of a US film: 4 x the average budget of a European film + cost amortization possibilities in US movie theaters before exportation
  • Gross revenues per film distributed in the EU countries: 6 million French francs / in the US: 31 million French francs

INFORMATION SOCIETY / Europe

  • Perspectives of growth announced in programming activities from now until 2005 (electronic commerce + sales generated by the new audiovisual services): + 80% (of which 35% are generated by the furnishing of new audiovisual services)
  • Share of online multimedia products in the European programming proposals from now until 2005: 15%
  • Growth forecast between 1995 and 2005 for audiovisual revenues (cinema + television) linked to the possibilities arising from the diversity of services offered and the decrease in technological costs (digital, interactive services and multimedia products): + 70%, or 54 billion euros generated in 2005 (Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom)

IN FRANCE:

Production

  • Volume of French production in Europe: 22% (1/3 of films originating in France are first films)
  • Evolution of the average cost of a film from 1980 to 1997: x 3.5
  • Financial contribution by distributors (1997): 36% (pre-purchase or co-production)
  • Financial share resting on movie theater performance: 44% (1997)
  • Production financing: 1/3 distributors - 15% automatic support - 11% advances on receipts

  • Market share of US distributors: 30%

Operations

  • Multiplexes and a significant increase in people going to the movie theaters in Europe: 20,700 screens in the EU (end of 1996) of which 18% are multiplexes. 2,500 more screens are predicted from now until the year 2000
  • Programming of French films by multiplexes as compared to the totality of movie theaters in France: 31% (against 32.5%)
  • Market share of French films: 26% (end of 1998) (against 31% in 1997), in spite of record entries in 1998 (170 million) and a numerical superiority of French titles (171 against 160 American films)
