Student life

The student revolt of May 1968 brought profound changes to the historic institution, among which was the termination of the 320 year-old tradition of the Prix de Rome Contests. The same year, architectural instruction was removed from the school, narrowing the course offerings to only the visual arts.

Student life at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts has always fostered group spirit and included, among other illustrious escapades, an annual midnight bath in the fountains of the Place de la Concorde. To this day, art students can be seen in the fall, walking along busy Boulevard Saint-Germain wearing togas or other classically-inspired apparel.
